Setting Up an Email Without a Phone Number: 7 Free Email Services That Can Help

Lindsay Hayes

If you're looking to create an email without a phone number, you can easily use Gmail. But if you're not a Gmail fan, Mail.com, Proton Mail and Yandex work well too.

I've always been mindful of my digital footprint, so I wasn't a fan of email services asking me for phone verification to register. I did some digging and found some great email providers that allow you to create emails and don't require phone number verification.

I've run through each of them, as well as some additional information.

What are the Best Email Services?

There are a couple of great email services that you can use.

1. Gmail

Gmail is definitely the most famous email provider out there. You can register an account on it without a phone number. However, it's better to include this.

You will get various features, like filters, smart composition, calendars and reminders.

You can make a free email address on Gmail, but you can also pay for a Workspace account which lets you use custom domains.

I'm not very pleased with Gmail's security, though. Google does not use true end-to-end encryption. You instead get encryption in transit (it is not the worst).

2. Mail.com

Mail.com Logo

Mail.com is the one best email service providers that do not require a mobile phone number. Registering accounts on it is fast and easy.

All you need to do is include your desired email address, password, and a security question to log into your account (in case you forget your password).

Free users will get up to 65 GB of free online storage space, which is appreciated.

When it comes to domain names, you will be able to choose from 200 different options.

What's also great is that you get access to two factor authentication, as well as spam protection to make your account more secure.

Mail.com comes with both iOS and Android apps. You can log into multiple email accounts.

Of course, you can use Mail.com on both Mac and Windows computers too.

The cherry on top is the fact that their servers are fast and reliable, and you get a free online office suite as well.

Although you won't need a phone number for verification, you will need a secondary email address.

Note that the free version of the app is not ad-free.

3. Tutanota

Tutanota Logo

Tutanota is another option. You will need a secondary email instead of a phone number for the registration process.

You get some useful features, like end-to-end encryption, as well as spam filters. Tutanota maintains a no-log policy, so you don't have to be worried about being tracked online.

It is a free, open-source email service. But if you're interested, you can go for a premium subscription. It will only cost around $1 a month.

Just remember that if you are going with a free account, you will only get 1 GB of storage space. This is definitely something to consider.

Tutanota accounts aren't compatible with the PGP and IMAP. protocols. This along with the fact that you only get 1 GB of free storage space lost it the top 2 spots.

Proton Mail is a popular free email service. You can easily create an email account on it without phone number verification.

You will get 500 MB of free storage space, and be able to send out 150 emails per day.

You don't have to worry about emails not being secured, as they come with end-to encryption. If you want, you can set emails to expire after 28 days to make sure no ones can get them.

Plus, all encrypted emails are password protected when being sent out.

If you go for a premium subscription, you will get up to 5 GB of storage space, and be able to send 1000 emails per day.

Premium accounts can access custom domain names and unlimited folders as well.

What's also nice is that the email service provider is an open source project.

4. Yandex Mail

Yandex Email Service Logo

Yandex mail is a top email provider. I've used it countless times before, and it has never disappointed me.

It is a Russian email service that lets you create free email accounts without needing phone numbers.

You get access to 10 GB of storage space with your free email account. On top of this, you get virus protection, as well as keyboard shortcuts.

I also like the fact that you get a built-in language translator.

The only issue with Yandex that I have is the fact that there are no formatting toolbars for writing letters.

5. Global Mail Exchange/ GMX Mail

GMX Mail Logo

I know several users who are fans of GMX Mail. it's an excellent choice so I just had to talk about it.

It is owned by the Global Mail Exchange company which is a major name, so you don't have to worry about anything shady happening to your data.

It is a free email service that works with both IMAP4 and POP3 protocols.

Free users get access to around 65 GB of space, which is impressive. You can also attach files that are a max 50 MB in size.

I like its user interface - it looks good and works easily. You will also get apps for both Android and iOS devices.

Although you won't need a phone number for to make your desired email address, you will need to include an alternative email for security purposes.

What are the Best Temporary Email Services?

Quite a few temporary email providers don't require phone number verification either. I thought of discussing these two in a separate section, since they don't fit in with the others on my list.

6. Mailinator

Mailinator Logo

Mailinator is another free email service that will let you signup without a phone number.

You can create and use your own public email address, but it will be accessible to other users. Mailinator works well if you just want to temporarily sign up for stuff and do not want to use your main email account. So you essentially get a shared temporary email address.

Here's a tip, though - don't share or store your personal information on it. As mentioned, email addresses are public so other users would be able to log into the same email account that you used.

There is no premium subscription to buy. Using Mailinator is completely free.

7. Tempin Box

Tempin Box Logo

Of course, I had to include Temp Mail. It's an email service that lets users create anonymous and temporary email addresses without phone number verification.

It's easy to use, as setting up an account takes around 2 minutes maximum.

Tempin gives you access to a public email address. Just note that you can only receive emails and not send them out which is why it's towards the bottom of my list. I think it works well as an alternate email address to sign up for things.

Also, as you would be using a public email address, keep in mind that your inbox is available for other users to see.

The anonymous sign ups are free. There is no premium subscription to buy whatsoever.

There are spam filters to weed out any unnecessary mails that you might get. Its servers can be a bit slow, however.

FAQ

Answered below are some popular questions.

Why Do So Many Email Providers Want Your Phone Number?

There are three main reasons why an email provider might want your phone number.

Verification

The most important reason for the phone verification is to make sure that you are not a bot. Allowing a bot to make an account would waste their resources and also risk getting hacked.

Two Factor Authentication

Apart from verification, email providers ask for your phone number for 2FA purposes. They would be able to text the number a special security code whenever you log in from a foreign location.

Account Recovery

You will be able to log back into your account with your phone number if you ever lose your password.

You can request a recovery code to be texted to it, which would verify your identity and let you change your password.

What Should You Look For When Choosing an Email Provider?

There are several email providers on the market. There are some points that will help you choose the best.

Let's talk about them.

Reputation

Reputation is important when it comes to email providers. You need to work with companies that are reputable and have been around for a while. This way, you won't need to worry that they're doing anything shady with your data.

Security Features

Security is one of the top points to consider when choosing an email provider. You should ideally register on a mail service that uses end-to-end encryption, as well as 2FA for when you get locked out.

Just keep in mind that you need a phone number or secondary email for 2FA.

Price

All the mail providers I outlined will allow you to make an account without a phone number for free. However, they also come with premium accounts that you can buy. You will be able to access better features, like custom domain names.

Check how expensive their premium accounts are before making a decision.

Features

Of course, you need to consider the different features you get too. Look for features like spam filtering, integrations, custom domains, backups, and virus protection.

You will get more features if you subscribe.

Support

You should work with a mail server that has excellent customer support. Going through reviews will help you figure this out.

Final Thoughts

There are many email services that allow you to create free email accounts without phone number verification.

The best of these has to be Gmail. Instead of a phone number for phone verification, you will need an alternative email address to verify who you are. It's free, but it allows you to subscribe for a premium account. It also comes with free email mobile apps for both IOS and Android.

You can also consider Yandex mail. It's not like most email providers, as you get a temporary disposable email address. It's a top choice if you're like me and need to keep your actual email account safe.

Of course, I also had to include Proton mail. It's probably the most popular choice. Your email will be automatically deleted after a set period. Plus, you get both virus protection, as well as a spam filter.
