You can't see deleted messages on Discord. Once you delete a message, it will be cleared from Discord's servers. However, some bots can work around this, like Dyno.
A friend of mine was trying to find deleted messages, and he came to me for help. I showed him that this was not possible without a bot's help. To learn how to solve this issue, keep reading to find out more.
How to See Deleted Messages on Discord?
You can't check deleted messages on Discord without a third-party bot. Although bots can help, they need to be on the server that the message was deleted on, and they can only track 100 messages at a time. You might not be able to see the deleted messages in case a lot of texts have been sent.
Considering how encrypted Discord is, it shouldn't surprise you that you can't see deleted texts without third-party help. Storing deleted messages breaches the website's privacy, as they function on a classic Internet Chat Relay system.
What Bots Can Check Deleted or Edited Messages When a User Deletes Texts?
There are quite a few bots that can help, but I would recommend Dyno, Logger and Betterdiscord.
I've run through how to use all three of them in the section below. However, you can only add a bot to a server if you have administrative permissions.
With that out of the way, let's get into it:
Dyno is the most popular choice from the three. Most people use it not just to see deleted messages, but to listen to music and customize their server.
Dyno's deleted messages tracking feature is called Audit Log. If you use the free version of the bot, you will only be able to track ten messages at a time. On the other hand, the premium version lets you track around hundred.
Follow these steps:
- Visit this link to download the bot to your discord server
- Enter your account credentials and sign into your Discord account
- Click on the Action Log button on the left
- Select the server that you want to add the bot to
- Click server's icon
- Toggle Enable Module feature from the pop up list
- Choose the actions that you want to log
- Tap the All the Deleted Messages option (but you can also choose any other features that you want the bot to come with)
As mentioned, you will only see 10 deleted or edited messages on the discord server Audit log without Premium Dyno.
The Message logger bot can help you check deleted messages on Discord too. Although it is a good choice, it does not take the number 1 spot as some users find its interface too advanced. If you're someone who is more tech-savvy, this might be something that you like.
Here is what you do:
- Go to the Message Logger website
- Click on the Invite button on the website
- Choose discord servers from the list to see deleted or edited discord messages
Unlike its counterpart above, you don't have to choose what features you want the bot to perform. It automatically logs messages, which happen whenever:
- A discord message has been changed
- A channel has been created or removed
- A user has been banned or un-banned
- Emojis have been added or removed from the server
- A user has joined or been kicked from the Discord server
- Someone gets ghost pinged
- Libraries go missing
- A bot has been added to the Discord server
- A user's role has been removed
- A new role has been created, edited or deleted
- A channel's permissions have been changed
- Server properties, like its name or region have been changed
- A message has been updated or deleted
- A user's nickname has been changed
- A user joins or leaves a voice channel
- A user has been muted in a voice channel
- A user agrees to your community rules
Install Betterdiscord
Unlike the above 2, Betterdiscord is a plugin and not a bot. However, you can still use it to get the job done.
Here is how you use it:
- Go to this site and download Betterdiscord (you will be asked for your Discord version)
- Download the MessageLoggerV2 Plugin
- Open Discord app on your computer
- Click the gear icon
- Select User Settings option
- Scroll down and then click on BetterDiscord header
- Click Plugins from the BetterDiscord header
- Select the Open Plugins Folder pop up
- Open the folder that the MessageLoggerV2 plugin comes in
- Drag the MessageLoggerV2 plugin and add it to the Plugins Folder in Discord
- Switch on the MessageLoggerV2 plugin by toggling the checkbox on the screen
- Click download Now to install any missing libraries
- Enable both XenoLib and ZeresPluginLibrary after they have been installed
- Right click on your server from the list
- Open logs
How Do You Report Online Harassment On Discord?
From my experience, most users want to know how to check deleted and edited messages, because they want to collect proof to report a user.
In case a user is harassing you, you can either report them from your computer or smartphone. However, the process is a bit more complicated on your computer.
Hence, I've discussed what to do on your phone first:
- Launch the discord app/site
- Navigate to any message that you want to report
- Press and hold it
- Click on the Report button from the corner of the list
- Select a type of report for the abusive message from the top menu
On a computer, follow these steps:
- Open discord page
- Click Settings from the gear icon on the bottom right corner of the screen
- Tap the Appearance option from the Advanced menu section
- Toggle the switch next to Developer Mode on
- Find a message from the user that you want to report, right-click on it, then select Copy ID. Paste this ID in a document as you might forget it otherwise
- Right click on the username to get the user ID
- After this, you will need the server ID. Click on the server name, then tap the copy ID button, and paste it into the same document as the others
Next:
- Go to the official request form page
- Click on the Trust & Safety button from the drop down menu
- Enter your email address into the designated form
- Select Harassment as the report type
- Under Subject, enter Abusive Behavior Report
- Paste all three ID numbers that you collected into the Description box, and edit the Note section to include any added information
- Fill the reCAPTCHA box on the bottom to confirm that you're not a robot
- Click Submit once you're done
- Wait for the Discord support team to get back to you
Can You Report a Deleted Message?
Even if a message gets deleted, you can still report it. Hopefully, you or other users have taken screenshots of it as proof. In case you haven't, you can go ahead and report the message anyway. Just remember that there is a chance that the Discord team may not take appropriate action.
You can keep contacting the Discord support team even if they reject your request, as they might decide to take action in the future.

Final Thoughts
Unfortunately, Discord users won't be able to view deleted messages, regardless of whether it is a file, text or picture.
However, there are ways to workaround the deleted messages issue by using bots. Dyno is a good example, but you will have to use the premium version of the tool. Also with Betterdiscord installed, you can get the job done.
Hopefully you found this how to find deleted discord messages guide useful.
