It is a type of transfer protocol, so you can think of it as the language that your computer uses to communicate with the storage device. It is essentially limited to SSDs (though not all SSDs are NVMe!).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>NVMe is a protocol that runs exclusively over the Peripheral Component Interconnect Express (PCIe) interface, which is built for high-speed peripherals. If that's the case, I'd love to make a comparison of SATA SSDs vs NVMe SSDs for you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"NVMe\"><\/span>NVMe<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you go shopping for an NVMe SSD, you'll likely see an assortment of drives in the M.2 form factor, which looks like a RAM stick.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, while NVMe drives can also come in the 2.5-inch form factor, you'll find that they are a lot more sparingly available, and there isn't much of a reason to go for these.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are some advantages you get when you go for NVMe SSDs, but there are also some downsides.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Pros\"><\/span>Pros<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>NVMe SSDs are super fast. In fact, they are pretty much the gold standard if you want the fastest transfer speeds you can get from computer storage. Theoretically, a PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD can transfer data at up to 7,880 MB each second, and some high-end M.2 NVMe SSDs, like the <a class=\"aawp-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/dp\/B0BHJJ9Y77?tag=cpu4-20&amp;linkCode=ogi&amp;th=1&amp;psc=1\" title=\"Samsung 990 PRO\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-aawp-product-id=\"B0BHJJ9Y77\" data-aawp-product-title=\"SAMSUNG 990 PRO Series - 2TB PCIe Gen4 X4 NVMe 2.0c - M.2 Internal SSD  MZ-V9P2T0B\/AM\" data-aawp-geotargeting=\"true\">Samsung 990 PRO<\/a>, get very close to this.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Most NVMe SSDs come in the M.2 form factor which is very compact. This makes them great for smaller builds or thin laptops. They also connect directly to the motherboard, which eliminates the need for extra cables.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>NVMe SSDs are much better choices if you want to minimize your power consumption. When idle and when in use, they drink much less power than SATA drives do.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Cons\"><\/span>Cons<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>With all the benefits of NVMe drives, it is no surprise that they are more expensive than other types of solid-state drives at the same capacity.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>NVMe drives are quickly becoming the standard storage solution, but there's a chance that an older computer's motherboard won't support this interface.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Most NVMe drives these days are M.2, so if the board doesn't have the appropriate socket, you simply won't be able to use it.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>NVMe drives come in different form factors, as they can either be 2.5-inch or M.2. Since M.2 drives can come in various lengths, compatibility needs to be double-checked, even when your system has an M.2 slot.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"SATA\"><\/span>SATA<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The SATA interface is something of an icon when it comes to computer interfaces. It has been around for a very long time and has reliably served as an interface for all kinds of drives, including SATA SSDs, HDDs, optical drives, and more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While SATA offered faster transfer speeds at the time of its arrival, it has been outpaced considerably.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite this though, it is still a very reliable interface. It has its advantages for storage solutions, but of course, there are also some disadvantages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Pros-2\"><\/span>Pros<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>SATA SSDs are rather affordable, especially when compared to NVMe drives. If you're trying to build a system under a tighter budget, these drives are a much better choice.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>SATA SSDs are very widely compatible. The SATA standard is still supported on all modern computer motherboards, so you should have no problem getting one installed in a PC.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Cons-2\"><\/span>Cons<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>SATA SSDs do not offer you the fastest read and write speeds that are currently attainable. While they are still quite fast, if you've used NVMe drives, you may likely notice the difference.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Most SATA SSDs that are available these days come in the 2.5-inch size, which while still rather compatible with most devices, doesn't favor compactness when compared to an NVMe drive.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A SATA SSD drinks more power than an NVMe drive. These are about 100 mm long and 70 mm in width. Their thickness can be either 7 mm (more common these days) or 9.5 mm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, as you know by now, NVMe M.2 drives are much smaller than that. They are 22 mm wide, but their lengths can vary significantly. An M.2 drive can be 30, 42, 60, 80, or even 110 mm long. However, 80 mm tends to be the most common for consumer drives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Performance\"><\/span>Performance<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>NVMe works over the PCIe interface and this is where those blazing speeds it is capable of come from.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>PCIe, as an interface, is constantly being updated, with PCIe 5.0 being the latest version. PCIe uses lanes for data transfer and each successive version increases the bandwidth of a single lane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>PCIe 3.0 could transfer at about 1 GB\/s on a single lane, and PCIe 4.0 doubled that to 2 GB\/s per lane. However, PCIe 5.0 pushes that to about 4GB\/s on each lane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The NVMe protocol can support up to 4 lanes on PCIe. What this means is, with an NVMe PCIe SSD, you can get a theoretical maximum speed of either 8 GB\/s on PCIe 4.0, or a ridiculous 16GB\/s for PCIe 5.0.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is blazing fast and way above what you can get with a SATA SSD. SATA ports were made for mechanical hard disk drives and were not built to handle super high speeds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even on the SATA III revision, the maximum speed you can get with a SATA drive is 600 MB\/s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Price\"><\/span>Price<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>As you might guess, NVMe PCIe SSDs are the more expensive option as they can give you much higher speeds than any SATA III SSDs can.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The good thing is that these days, the price difference is much smaller than before. In some cases, you'll only need to add a handful of extra dollars to upgrade to the equivalent NVMe PCIe SSDs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Which_is_the_Better_Choice_for_Me\"><\/span>Which is the Better Choice for Me?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>At the end of the day, you want to know which of the modern SSDs you should go for. Should you set up your tent with NVMe drives or go with their SATA cousins?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you need high performance for the tasks you use your system for, or you're in need of the very best gaming performance, the easy answer is to go for NVMe-based SSDs.
