How Much Space Does Fortnite Take Up on PC?

Lindsay Hayes

If you install Fortnite on your PC, you'll find that the base game takes up about 27 GB of space on your computer, and can go up to just over 40 GB with additional content installed.

Epic Games' Fortnite is one of my favorite battle royale games and I play it constantly with my friends. Most of us appreciate the fact that the game takes up a relatively small amount of storage space. The recent chapter 4 update added around 10 GBs of date to the file. While we initially had our doubts about installing the big update, these were all put to rest after we enjoyed playing the latest chapter.

So, if you're asking how much space Fortnite takes up on a PC, and whether you should install all the additional content, then you've come to the right place. Let's get right to it.

How Much Storage Will Fortnite Take Up on My Computer?

If you install Fortnite on your computer, the base installation file will take up about 27 GB. However, it is a good idea to have more storage space available - maybe about 30 GB - before installing it to make sure the setup doesn't run into any problems.

However, when Epic Games released the Chapter 4 update on December 2022, I installed it right away. With that, I was able to see that the file size jumped to about 42.5 GB thanks to all the new content that was added.

Also, keep in mind that if you play Fortnite free, that is, without the paid Battle Pass system, the game is smaller by just 1 GB.

Was the Fortnite Size Always Like This?

Interestingly enough, if you download Fortnite these days, you're dealing with a shrunken file size compared to what the game was like around 2020.

Back then, Epic Games' Fortnite was a massive game, taking up about 90 GB of space on your Windows PC. For many gamers, this could cause a space issue where they didn't have the capacity to install other games.

Fortunately, how much space Fortnite takes up was able to drop significantly thanks to serious optimizations from Epic Games, reducing the Fortnite file size to about a third of what it was originally.

Why is Epic Games' Fortnite So Large?

Even with its recent shrunken file size, Fornite is still a very large game by most people's standards. This begs the question, why is the Fortnite file size so large?

There is a lot of content in the game, and with that, it's bound to have a large file size.

Part of what contributed to the huge file size of this Epic Games title before it was optimized was the audio and graphics files.

Even though they were compressed and optimized for a much easier-to-manage Fortnite file size, these assets are still relatively high-quality, and with so many different skins and models in Fortnite, it shouldn't be a surprise that the file size is that big.

How Much Space Does Fortnite Take Up on Other Platforms?

So, this game has a large file size on PC, but what about if you like to play Fortnite on other platforms like PS5 or Xbox Series X/S? How large is it in those cases?

To start off, you should know that the game size is largest on PC. If you're using any other platform for this game, it is a lot smaller than it is on your computer.

For instance, on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and the Nintendo Switch, the Fortnite size is just 18 GB. It's close on the Xbox One, at 19 GB.

The Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S are a bit larger than the rest at 22.5 GB.

There are mobile versions of this battle royale game too, with the file size, in this case, being a mere 3 GB whether you're playing on Android devices or on iOS. This is because the assets don't need to be as high-quality.

Are There Popular Battle Royale Games with Smaller Sizes?

If you don't have enough space on your computer for installing Fortnite, you might want to look into other battle royale games which have a smaller file size.

However, keep in mind that the average size for these types of games is pretty big, especially when they are AAA titles. For instance, the installation size for something like Call of Duty: Warzone is over 200 GB!

Valorant is one option but at about 28.4 GB, it isn't too far off from Fortnite. If you're going to have all the latest Fortnite content installed though, Valorant is a better option. The same applies to PUBG, at about 30 GB.

Perhaps the only popular option that doesn't take up as much space as Fortnite is Danger Zone, which is a spin-off of Counter-Strike. You'll only need to spare about 15 GB to install this one.

Final Words

So, how much space does Fortnite take up on your computer? When you install this battle royale from Epic Games, the overall game will take up about 30 GB of hard drive space. With the Battle Pass, this increases by 1 GB, and with the Chapter 4 update, the overall game goes up to about 42.5 GB.

Epic Games' Fortnite is on the smaller side when compared to other games like Call of Duty: Warzone and Apex: Legends. Since Fortnite is stored locally on your hard drive, you might want to go for other games which take up less space. In this case, the best options you have are Counter-Strike Danger Zone, Valorant, and PUBG.
